In 2023, I was introduced to Gussy’s Gut, a supplement co-created by Dr. Ian Billinghurst (the father of the BARF diet) and Rob Ryan, founder of Gussy’s Gut. Their mission was simple but powerful — create a whole food supplement that supports the root of canine wellness: the gut.
Gussy’s Gut Boost (formerly Daily) is a fermented, freeze-dried blend of 19 superfoods, rich in naturally occurring prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and enzymes. This powerful combination delivers over 180 nutrients that are often missing or poorly absorbed from synthetic supplements.
The result? A more balanced gut microbiome, stronger immune system, and better overall health — from the inside out.
At the time of this review, I’ve been adding Gussy’s Gut to my dogs’ meals for nearly a year, and the difference has been worth every scoop.
What’s Inside Gussy’s Gut?
Gussy’s Gut is made with high-quality, organic and biodynamic ingredients — a holistic approach to farming that avoids pesticides and nurtures the soil and ecosystem. Each ingredient serves a specific purpose, from detoxification to digestive support.
Active Ingredients
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cilantro, parsley, kale, mustard greens, artichoke, dandelion, turmeric, papaya, red beets, milk thistle, oregano, wild blueberries, alfalfa, decaffeinated green tea, grass-fed goat kefir, and kelp.
The ingredients have been updated to replace the kelp with ginger: Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cilantro, Parsley, Lacinato Kale, Mustard Greens, Jerusalem Artichoke, Dandelion, Turmeric, Papaya, Red Beets, Milk Thistle, Oregano, Wild Blueberries, Alfalfa, Decaffeinated Green Tea, Grass-fed Goat Kefir, Ginger.
Inactive Ingredients
Ancient sea salt, organic powdered milk with organic cheddar and/or organic parmesan cheeses (which help preserve and flavor the blend).
This combination provides a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and live cultures — all from real food.
The Benefits of Fermented Foods for Dogs
Fermentation is a natural process in which beneficial bacteria break down starches and sugars into simpler, more digestible compounds. In the process, it creates probiotics, enzymes, and organic acids that support gut and immune health.
Adding fermented foods like Gussy’s Gut can:
Improve digestion by increasing enzyme activity.
Enhance nutrient absorption by breaking down food compounds for easier uptake.
Block antinutrients that interfere with nutrient absorption.
Strengthen the immune system by supporting 70% of the body’s immune cells housed in the gut.
Reduce inflammation and support detoxification pathways.
Because Gussy’s Gut is made from organic, biodynamic produce and fermented goat kefir, it offers these benefits without the pesticide load that’s common in conventionally grown vegetables.
My Experience with Gussy’s Gut
My dogs took to Gussy’s Gut immediately — no hesitation, no nose-turning. I’ve used it dry as a meal topper and hydrated it into a paste. Either way, bowls were licked clean.
When I first saw the price, I hesitated. But after realizing that a single teaspoon per dog per day was plenty, I found that one bag lasted nearly three months for three large dogs — breaking down to roughly $30/month total (or about $10 per dog).
And the results?
Firmer, healthier stools
Less bloating and gassiness
Noticeable improvement in skin and coat
Decreased signs of leaky gut
Best of all, I was able to cut down on other supplements — replacing multiple bottles with one powerhouse whole food formula.
I still rotate probiotics to encourage bacterial diversity in the gut, but Gussy’s Gut remains a staple in our supplement rotation.
Meet Other Gussy’s Gut Supplements
Gussy’s Gut: Sustain
After seeing consistent results with Gussy’s Gut Boost, I added Gussy’s Gut Sustain to my rotation. Sustain is formulated to help dogs maintain a healthy gut microbiome once balance has been established — making it a great follow-up to Boost or as part of an ongoing probiotic rotation.
Sustain stands out because it’s made with a blend of organic, fermented greens, herbs, and fruits that work synergistically to promote digestion, detoxification, and immune resilience. Like all Gussy’s Gut products, the fermentation process unlocks nutrients and enzymes that are often missing or difficult for dogs to extract from raw vegetables and herbs.
Key Ingredients
Broccoli, carrot, parsley, dandelion leaf, cilantro, apple, moringa, holy basil, and plantain.
Benefits of Gussy’s Gut Sustain
Supports long-term gut balance by maintaining diverse beneficial bacteria.
Encourages gentle detoxification through herbs like dandelion leaf, cilantro, and parsley.
Provides natural antioxidants from apple, moringa, and broccoli to reduce oxidative stress.
Promotes calm and resilience — holy basil acts as an adaptogen that helps the body manage stress.
Aids digestion and nutrient absorption, reducing gas, bloating, and occasional loose stool.
I use Sustain as part of my dogs’ regular rotation several days a week. It helps me keep their gut health steady without overloading their systems with too many separate supplements. Sustain pairs beautifully with Gussy’s Gut Boost — together, they support both the restoration and maintenance phases of gut and immune wellness.
Gussy’s Gut: Youthful Grasses & Sprouts
When my senior dogs began slowing down, I added Gussy’s Gut Youthful Grasses & Sprouts to our supplement rotation. This blend is formulated to support cellular health, detoxification, and longevity, especially for aging dogs — though it’s gentle and beneficial for dogs of all ages.
What makes Youthful Grasses & Sprouts unique is its simplicity and purity: a combination of 100% organic, 100% fermented grasses and sprouts. These young, vibrant plants are packed with chlorophyll, antioxidants, enzymes, and amino acids — all essential for rebuilding and protecting the body at the cellular level.
Key Ingredients
Organic wheatgrass, organic alfalfa grass, organic barley grass, organic oat grass, organic broccoli sprouts, organic alfalfa sprouts, and organic cabbage sprouts.
Benefits of Youthful Grasses & Sprouts
Promotes gentle detoxification by supporting liver and kidney function.
Provides antioxidant and chlorophyll-rich nourishment to help fight oxidative stress and cellular aging.
Encourages joint and connective tissue health with nutrient-dense greens that aid tissue repair.
Supports healthy skin, coat, and energy levels through enhanced cellular regeneration.
Aids digestion and immune function, thanks to naturally occurring enzymes and beneficial microbes from fermentation.
I’ve seen subtle but steady improvements in my senior dogs since adding Youthful Grasses & Sprouts — brighter eyes, more energy, and smoother recovery after playtime or long walks. It’s a clean, whole-food way to give their bodies a daily dose of rejuvenation without synthetic additives or fillers.

Possible Risks and Considerations
While Gussy’s Gut has been a fantastic addition to my dogs’ diet, fermented foods aren’t ideal for every dog.
1. Taste & Tolerance
Some dogs may dislike the tangy, earthy flavor of fermented products. My advice: start small. Try a commercial fermented product before diving into homemade versions. Luckily, none of my dogs have rejected Gussy’s Gut.
2. Digestive Adjustment
If your dog is new to fermented foods, start with ⅛–¼ teaspoon and slowly increase. A sudden introduction can cause gas, bloating, or loose stools in sensitive dogs.
3. Health Conditions That May Require Caution
According to Rob Ryan, founder of Gussy’s Gut, this supplement isn’t suitable for dogs currently struggling with:
Yeast overgrowth
Histamine intolerance
Mast cell tumors (MCTs)
“We prefer customers not start Gussy’s Gut if your dog is compromised or you are worried about yeast overgrowth, histamine intolerance, or MCTs. We never want to cause discomfort — even if there’s just a 1% chance. Fermented superfoods are an amazing addition after resolving these issues. We’re not a therapeutic supplement — we support wellness and balance.” – Rob Ryan, Gussy’s Gut founder
Buffy, a dog I adopted in 2025, is prone to environmental allergies and not a good fit for Gussy’s Gut. Instead, I add supplements by Adored Beast Apothecary.
When Fermented Foods Might Not Be Right
Histamine Intolerance
Fermented foods are naturally high in histamines. In dogs that are histamine-sensitive, this can trigger itching, redness, or digestive upset. Work with a holistic vet to identify triggers and use low-histamine fresh foods until your dog’s tolerance improves.
Mast Cell Tumors (MCTs)
Dogs with MCTs already have elevated histamine levels. Adding high-histamine foods may worsen symptoms. Regularly check your dog’s body for new lumps and bumps and discuss any changes with your vet.
Yeast Overgrowth
Yeast thrives in warm, moist environments and can flare up when the immune system is out of balance. Common symptoms include itchy paws, ear infections, and a musty odor. Reducing carbs, switching to fresh food, and adding antifungal support (like Adored Beast’s Yeasty Beast Protocol) can help restore balance before introducing ferments.
Final Thoughts on Gussy’s Gut Boost
Gussy’s Gut Boost is one of the most thoughtfully formulated supplements I’ve ever added to my dogs’ meals. While it may not be ideal for every dog, it has earned a permanent spot in my rotation thanks to its noticeable benefits, clean ingredients, and whole-food approach.
By keeping Gussy’s Gut in our rotation alongside other probiotics, I’m supporting gut diversity, which plays a vital role in long-term health, immunity, and resilience.
In a market full of synthetic supplements, Gussy’s Gut stands out as a real food solution — one that honors the science of the gut microbiome and the ancestral wisdom of fresh feeding.
If you’re looking for an easy, nutrient-dense way to support your dog’s digestion, detoxification, and immune system, Gussy’s Gut Boost is absolutely worth exploring.
