But…Don’t Senior Dogs Need More Protein?

One of the biggest myths in dog nutrition is that “older dogs need less protein.”
The truth? It’s the opposite — senior dogs actually need more high-quality protein to maintain muscle mass, joint strength, immune health, and organ function.

As dogs age, their bodies become less efficient at using protein. That means they need more of it (not less) to repair tissues, make hormones, and keep their immune systems strong.

The Myth: “Too much protein will damage your dog’s kidneys.”

This idea came from outdated studies done on dogs with existing kidney disease who were fed poor-quality, highly processed protein — not fresh, whole-food diets. Pet professionals who are still sharing this myth fail to acknowledge that kibble is a dehydrating food, which can be harder on the kidneys.

The Truth: Healthy senior dogs thrive on a protein-rich, fresh-food diet.

Fresh protein = easier to digest.
Raw or lightly cooked meat isn’t exposed to the same high heat and chemical processing as kibble, so the amino acids stay intact.

Protein supports lean muscle.
Muscle mass helps regulate metabolism, balance blood sugar, and protect joints — all vital for senior dogs.

Protein supports organ repair and immune function.
The liver, heart, and immune cells rely on amino acids to regenerate and stay strong.

Low protein often means more carbs.
When protein is cut back, carbs go up — and too many carbs can lead to inflammation, weight gain, and insulin resistance.

What About Kidney Health?

If your dog already has kidney disease, protein restriction may be necessary under veterinary guidance. But if your senior dog is healthy, a high-quality, fresh-protein diet supports kidney function — it doesn’t harm it.

How Much Protein Do Seniors Need?

Why I Don’t Vaccinate My Senior Dogs

As my dogs have entered their senior years, I’ve chosen not to continue routine vaccinations. The immune systems of older dogs can become less resilient, and additional vaccines can sometimes trigger inflammation, autoimmune reactions, or other health setbacks in already aging bodies.

My dogs also live a low-risk lifestyle — they don’t visit dog parks, boarding facilities, or other high-exposure environments where contagious diseases are more likely to spread. Because of this, their risk of contracting illness is extremely low. I made this decision after an in-depth discussion with my traditional veterinarian, who reviewed my dogs’ health histories, lifestyle, and considered their current antibody protection (we did not conduct titer testing).

Together, we agreed that minimizing unnecessary vaccines and focusing on natural immune support is the safest approach for my senior dogs.
