In honor of National Puppy Day, I thought it would be interesting to discuss transitioning puppies to a fresh-food diet.

Feeding a homemade diet to puppies requires careful consideration and planning to ensure they receive all the essential nutrients for healthy growth and development. Here are key points and considerations that people should know about feeding a homemade diet to puppies:

  1. Nutritional Requirements: Due to their rapid growth and development, puppies have unique nutritional requirements compared to adult dogs. A balanced diet for puppies should contain the right balance of protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals essential for their growth, energy, and overall health.

  2. Consultation with a Nutritionist: Before starting a homemade diet for a puppy, some dog owners can benefit from a consultation with a certified canine nutritionist to create a balanced and appropriate meal plan tailored to the puppy's specific needs. They can help ensure that the diet meets the puppy's nutritional requirements at each stage of growth.

  3. Protein Quality: Protein is crucial for building strong muscles, tissues, and organs in growing puppies. Ensure that the protein sources in the homemade diet are high quality and easily digestible, such as lean meats, eggs, or dairy products.

  4. Fats and Essential Fatty Acids: Fats provide energy and support healthy skin, coat, and brain development in puppies. In the homemade diet, include sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids like salmon oil or animal fat.

  5. Calcium and Phosphorus Balance: Maintaining the right balance of calcium and phosphorus is vital for proper bone development in puppies. Avoid over-supplementing these minerals, as it can lead to skeletal issues like developmental orthopedic diseases.

  6. Vitamins and Minerals: Puppies need a variety of vitamins and minerals for their overall health and well-being. Ensure that the homemade diet includes a variety of healthy ingredients to provide a broad spectrum of essential nutrients.

  7. Feeding Schedule: Puppies require more frequent meals than adult dogs due to their small stomachs and high energy needs. Divide their daily food intake into several meals throughout the day to support their growth and energy levels.

Feeding a Daily Balanced Diet to Puppies

Feeding a daily balanced diet to puppies is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Healthy Growth and Development: A balanced diet provides the essential nutrients for puppies to grow and develop properly, supporting their bone growth, muscle development, and overall health.

  2. Prevention of Nutritional Deficiencies: A balanced diet helps prevent nutritional deficiencies that can lead to health issues, poor growth, or developmental problems in puppies.

  3. Optimal Energy Levels: Proper nutrition ensures puppies have the energy they need for play, exercise, and learning, supporting their overall well-being and vitality.

  4. Immune System Support: A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants helps support a puppy's immune system, making them more resilient to illnesses and infections.

  5. Long-Term Health: Providing a balanced diet during puppyhood sets the foundation for lifelong health and can help prevent health issues in adulthood.

Feeding puppies a daily balanced diet is essential for their growth, development, and overall health. Because of this, I’ve never trusted my formulating skills to create a diet for my puppies. Instead, I feed premade raw from trusted brands for a puppy’s first six to seven months. When Bella joined our family, I called my favorite brands to confirm that their recipes were formulated for all life stages. And I asked what they’d recommend adding to the bowl for a growing puppy.

All Life Stages vs. Puppy Food

The terms "all life stages" and "puppy" food refer to specific types of dog food formulated to meet the varying nutritional needs of dogs at different life stages. Here are the key differences between "all life stages" and "puppy" food:

  1. Nutritional Content:

  • Puppy Food: Puppy food is specifically formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of growing puppies. It typically contains higher levels of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals to support healthy growth and development, including bone formation, muscle growth, and cognitive development.

  • All Life Stages Food: All life stages food is designed to meet the nutritional needs of dogs at all life stages, including puppies, adult dogs, and senior dogs. It provides a balanced diet suitable for puppies and adult dogs, eliminating the need to switch foods as the dog ages.

  1. Calorie Density:

  • Puppy Food: Puppy food is often more calorie-dense than adult dog food to meet the high energy requirements of growing puppies. This higher calorie content helps support their rapid growth and high energy levels.

  • All Life Stages Food: All life stages food may have a calorie content suitable for puppies, adult dogs, and seniors, making it a versatile option for households with dogs of different life stages. However, it may not have as high a calorie content as specific puppy food formulations.

  1. Protein and Nutrient Levels:

  • Puppy Food: Puppy food typically contains higher levels of protein, as well as essential nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, DHA, and other vitamins and minerals crucial for the growth and development of puppies.

  • All Life Stages Food: All life stages food also contains adequate levels of protein and essential nutrients, but the concentrations may be adjusted to meet the needs of dogs at different life stages. It aims to provide a balanced diet that supports overall health and well-being, regardless of age.

  1. Transitioning Period:

  • Puppy Food: Puppies should be fed a specially formulated puppy food until they reach adulthood, usually around 12 months of age for most breeds. This ensures they receive the optimal nutrition for their growth and development.

  • All Life Stages Food: All life stages food can be fed to puppies from a young age and continued into adulthood and senior years, providing a consistent diet throughout their life without the need for frequent food changes.

While both "all life stages" and "puppy" food aim to provide complete and balanced nutrition for dogs, puppy food is specifically formulated to meet the higher energy and nutrient requirements of growing puppies, while all life stages food is designed to cater to dogs of all ages, including puppies, adults, and seniors. There aren’t many raw food manufacturers formulating premade food for puppies, so we have all life stages or professionally formulated recipes.

Transitioning a Puppy to Fresh Food

I’ve only transitioned four puppies to a raw diet, but I did it the same way, with each without an issue. The second they entered my home, they had their first raw meal. Cold turkey worked because they were healthy puppies without any digestive problems.

I always transition to a commercial raw, formulated for all life stages. I started with commercial raw with three of our puppies; Apollo was seven months old when he joined our family and ate raw and homemade dog food.

I always keep Olewo carrots and canned pureed pumpkin on hand if a puppy has loose stool, but it’s rarely an issue.

My only mistake was feeding homemade raw to puppies, using a deficient recipe: chicken drumsticks, thighs, liver, and gizzards.

So, if you were to ask me what to feed a puppy, I’d say “an all-life stages raw food brand or work with a nutritionist.” But that doesn’t mean you can’t successfully feed a puppy a homemade diet; it just means I’m too chicken to try.

Are there any raw brands that make a puppy food?
